Fire in the Hole 2 Slot Review: Back Down the Shaft

This Fire in the Hole 2 slot review covers the February 2024 sequel to one of Nolimit City's most popular games. The dwarf miners return to the same collapsing 6 by 6 mine, but this time the shaft is full of buried surprises, the bonus has persistent upgrades and the max win climbs to 65,000x.

It would have been easy to reskin the original and call it done. Instead, Nolimit City kept the core loop intact and added enough new layers to make the sequel feel like a genuine step forward rather than a copy.

If you are new to the series, the Fire in the Hole 2 demo on ReelRadar is the best place to begin. The bonus round in particular has a lot of moving parts, and free play lets you learn them at your own pace.

The Collapsing Mine and Buried Features

Each spin starts with three active rows on six reels. A winning combination, an xBomb explosion or Wild Mining triggers a collapse, and every collapse opens another row until the grid reaches its full 6 by 6 size with up to 46,656 ways to win.

The big addition is dirt. Blocks of dirt can hide Wild, xSplit or Bonus symbols, and anything buried stays inactive until the dirt is cleared by a nearby explosion or hit by an xSplit. It adds a small layer of anticipation to every spin, because a single blast can uncover exactly the symbol you needed.

Nolimit City lists the hit frequency at 25.09%, so about one spin in four pays something. Bets run from €0.20 to €100 per spin according to the provider.

xBomb, xSplit and Wild Mining

The xBomb Wild works much as it did in the first game. It substitutes for everything except Bonus symbols, explodes on any win, removes the symbols around it and adds one to the win multiplier for the next collapse. If a spin produces no win and Wild Mining does not trigger, the xBomb still explodes and forces a fresh collapse.

xSplit is the new weapon. It splits every symbol on its row, doubling their count, and counts of eight or more are shown as a multiplier. Bonus symbols and other xSplits cannot be split. An xSplit sitting to the right of a Scatter also turns that Scatter into a Super Scatter.

Wild Mining has been upgraded too. It now triggers when three to six matching symbols line up horizontally or vertically on a spin with no win, awarding one to four Wilds in the middle of the line before the regular symbols above the bar explode.

There is also an xBet option, priced at 250% of the base bet. It guarantees at least one Bonus symbol on the last inactive row each spin and removes all dirt from the main game, so buried features trigger as soon as their row opens.

Lucky Wagon Spins and Persistent Upgrades

Three, four or five Bonus symbols trigger Lucky Wagon Spins, opening two, three or four rows respectively. The round starts with three spins, and the counter resets to three every time a coin lands. Coins are worth multiples of your bet.

A row of minecarts above the grid reveals an enhancer each spin, and it activates when a coin lands directly beneath it. Coin Values set a coin's worth, Multipliers boost every coin on the reel below, and Dynamite adds value before scattering more dynamite that can clear dirt, double coins or open chests. Beer reactivates up to five earlier coins, and the Dwarf collects every value in the reel area onto one spot.

The game changer is the seventh reel of Upgrade Crystals. Upgrades can make enhancers persistent, keeping Coin Values and Multipliers active for the next spin, while Dynamite, Beer and the Dwarf stay switched on for the rest of the feature. Chests opened by Dynamite also become Collect Chests that gather the values in their column on every spin.

A persistent Dwarf is the dream scenario, because it keeps collecting the whole grid spin after spin. The round ends once the reel area is full and no active features remain.

Fire in the Hole 2 RTP, Volatility and Max Win

The Fire in the Hole 2 RTP is listed at 96.07%. Check the information screen of the version you load, because the paytable at your casino is the definitive number.

Nolimit City rates the volatility as extreme. The free spins frequency is listed at about 1 in 211 spins, and the gap between an average bonus and a great one is enormous.

The Fire in the Hole 2 max win is 65,000x your bet, and the provider calls hitting it El Beerado. Once the total crosses that line, the round ends and the full amount is paid. Nolimit City puts the odds at roughly 1 in 17 million, so this is a far longer shot than the original, even with the higher cap.

Bonus Buy Options and Prices

Where the Nolimit Bonus is offered, the menu is generous. Lucky Wagon Spins cost 70x the bet with three Bonus symbols, 200x with four and 600x with five. A Lucky Draw option sits at 175x, and the top tier, five Bonus symbols with a guaranteed persistent Dwarf, costs 3,600x.

That 3,600x option is the most exciting buy in the game and also the most dangerous. It gives you the best possible start, but it can still return far less than its price.

These features are removed in some regulated markets. Try them in Fire in the Hole 2 free play first so you know what a typical bought round looks like.

Our Verdict on Fire in the Hole 2

Fire in the Hole 2 is a model sequel. The buried features add tension to the base game, xSplit gives the grid a new way to explode, and the persistent upgrades in Lucky Wagon Spins make the bonus far deeper than before.

It earns our Masterpiece rating with a score of 10.0/10. Among Nolimit City slots, few manage to be this chaotic and this readable at the same time, and the 65,000x cap gives it the big ceiling we always look for.

Slots are random, and no feature or buy can guarantee a profit. Please gamble responsibly and play only if you are 18 or over. You can play the free Fire in the Hole 2 demo on ReelRadar whenever you like.
